HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
A wonderful production of an excellent play. Well-acted, well-directed, superbly satisfying. Kevin V. Smith directs this deftly, unapologetically and in search of a new paradigm for what is considered acceptable theatre in America.

This is theatre that asks of the audience, that wills participation and thought. It will turn some people off because it is not easy, it is not straightforward, it is not simply entertainment. But for those who crave more from their theatrical experiences than two hours of escapism, this is utterly refreshing.

★★★½ (out of 4)
[A] brave interpretation of Camus’ play. Thoroughly entertaining and captivating visually. [Smith] has managed to communicate to his audience’s hearts and intellect.

One thing is certain for the future of this brazen company: when they fail, they will fail big; and when they succeed, as with The Misunderstanding, they will succeed profoundly.
— Chicago Theater Beat
A shattering final act that combines fury and despair. Smith lands on a striking visual metaphor for his highly stylized staging of Camus’s play.
— Time Out Chicago
Adventurous theatergoers who like their directorial concepts heavy and their drama dark and deep will take pleasure. And since Chicago is a town that supports directors making big, bold choices - think Robert Falls, Mary Zimmerman - director Kevin V. Smith’s staging will please some, infuriate others, but definitely keep the conversation going about the unique work of Theater Y.
